ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the clinical application value of preoperative colonoscopic marking by Nd-Fe-B magnet ring to assist laparoscopy. Methods:A total of 51 patients with colorectal tumor who underwent radical laparoscopy from January 2020 to October 2021 at the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Guizhou Provincial People's Hospital were recruited. The patients were marked by Nd-Fe-B magnet ring under endoscopy one day before the operation, another magnet ring was sent into the abdominal cavity during the radical laparoscopy through cannula. The two magnet rings were attracted and clung to each other to orient the lesions. The basic information of patients, location of preoperative marks under endoscopy and laparoscopy conditions were recorded. Results:All 51 Nd-Fe-B magnet rings were successfully located to the position of colorectal tumor and fixed. According to the location of the lesions, there were 15 cases of transverse colon, 12 cases of descending colon, 19 cases of sigmoid colon, and 5 cases of upper rectal segment. According to the lesion type, there were 21 cases of colon cancer, 25 cases of polyp carcinomatosis, and 5 cases of laterally spreading tumors with partial carcinomatosis. There were 5 cases with positive margins after endoscopic mucosal resection and 1 case with positive margin after endoscopic submucosal dissection. All lesions were accurately located during the operation. The marking time was 4.1±1.2 min (3-6 min) before the operation and the localization time was 1.5±1.1 min (0.9-5.3 min) during the operation. All magnet rings were removed from the body by laparoscope. The mean distances between the tumor and the cutting edge of the proximal and distal intestinal segments were 5.5 cm and 6.3 cm, respectively. No complications such as colon mucosal injury, bleeding, intestinal perforation or local inflammatory reactions occurred.Conclusion:Nd-Fe-B magnet ring tracer technique for laparoscopic orientation is simple, fast, accurate and safe with no need for additional equipment or apparatus, which is worthy of clinical application.

ABSTRACT

Ramping-up is the magnet current injection procedure which is under the control of resistance, voltage, current lead temperature, magnet pressure, temperature and so on. In this procedure, the factors related to the stability of the magnet such as, magnet temperature, pressure and currents are constantly changing. This procedure is the main step which the magnet-quench occurs in. This study uses the data collected during 7 years and SIMENS MRI ramping-up theory, in order to help engineers understand the key factors to reduce the magnet quench during the ramping up procedure.

ABSTRACT

The efficiency of the Mosquito Magnet Liberty PlusTM (MMLP) trap was evaluated baited with the chemical attractants 1-octen-3-ol (octenol) and Lurex3M (L-lactic acid) together with carbon dioxide (CO2) to collect anophelines in the Amerindian village Boca de Nichare, Sucre municipality, Bolívar State, Venezuela. The trap was operated between 18:00 and 06: hours, 10 nights per month for four months (July-October 2015), the attractants were alternated nightly. To determine the host seeking behavior of anophelines, the trap cage was changed every 4 hours. Five species of Anopheles and four of Culicinae were collected; Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) darlingi Root and Anopheles oswaldoi (Peryassú) sensu lato were the most abundant species collected. The Align Rank Transform (ART) test for nonparametric ANOVA for the variable attractant and its interactions with species and hour interval were not significant (p > 0.05). An. darlingi and An. oswaldoi s.l. showed contrasting host seeking activity: An. darlingi showed a peak between 22:00 and 02:00 hours, while in An. oswaldoi s.l. there was a steady increase in activity up to the interval 02:00-06:00 hours. The MMLP trap baited either with octenol or Lurex is an alternative method for entomological surveillance in remote Amerindian malaria endemic areas. The biting activity of the vectors An. darlingi and An. oswaldoi s.l. suggests that the use of long-lasting insecticide treated nets could be an effective method to control the transmission of malaria in this area(AU)

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of type of magnet attachment and implant angulation in two implant overdenture models.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Magnet attachments used in this study were flat and dome types (MGT5515, MGT5520D, Dentium Co., Seoul, Korea). Two implants with keepers were inserted in the resin blocks at a distance of 24 mm. For the first model, the implants were parallel to the vertical and perpendicular to the horizontal; for the second model, both were angulated 5 degrees to the mesial; for the third model, both were angulated 10 degrees toward the mesial. The retentive force was measured in both vertical and lateral directions. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software version 22.0 (α=.05).RESULTS: The flat type magnet attachment showed the highest lateral retentive force in the 20° divergent group (P<.05) and the dome type magnet attachment showed the highest lateral retentive force in the parallel group (P<.05). The vertical and lateral retentive force of the dome type magnet attachment was greater than that of the flat type magnet attachment in every direction (P<.05).CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, the dome shape magnet attachment can resist vertical and lateral retentive force more superiorly than the flat type magnet attachment, regardless of angle, in the mandibular two implant model.

ABSTRACT

Portable low-cost magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems have the potential to enable “point-of-care” and timely MRI diagnosis, and to make this imaging modality available to routine scans and to people in underdeveloped countries and areas. With simplicity, no maintenance, no power consumption, and low cost, permanent magnets/magnet arrays/magnet assemblies are attractive to be used as a source of static magnetic field to realize the portability and to lower the cost for an MRI scanner. However, when taking the canonical Fourier imaging approach and using linear gradient fields, homogeneous fields are required in a scanner, resulting in the facts that either a bulky magnet/magnet array is needed, or the imaging volume is too small to image an organ if the magnet/magnet array is scaled down to a portable size. Recently, with the progress on image reconstruction based on non-linear gradient field, static field patterns without spatial linearity can be used as spatial encoding magnetic fields (SEMs) to encode MRI signals for imaging. As a result, the requirements for the homogeneity of the static field can be relaxed, which allows permanent magnets/magnet arrays with reduced sizes, reduced weight to image a bigger volume covering organs such as a head. It offers opportunities of constructing a truly portable low-cost MRI scanner. For this exciting potential application, permanent magnets/magnet arrays have attracted increased attention recently. A magnet/magnet array is strongly associated with the imaging volume of an MRI scanner, image reconstruction methods, and RF excitation and RF coils, etc. through field patterns and field homogeneity. This paper offers a review of permanent magnets and magnet arrays of different kinds, especially those that can be used for spatial encoding towards the development of a portable and low-cost MRI system. It is aimed to familiarize the readers with relevant knowledge, literature, and the latest updates of the development on permanent magnets and magnet arrays for MRI. Perspectives on and challenges of using a permanent magnet/magnet array to supply a patterned static magnetic field, which does not have spatial linearity nor high field homogeneity, for image reconstruction in a portable setup are discussed.

ABSTRACT

There are several unfavorable conditions regarding alveolar bone condition that may compromise the denture patient's satisfaction. Chewing efficiency may not be satisfactory when alveolar bone is deficient, and the denture stability could hardly be achieved when alveolar bone shape is irregular. Implant overdenture can be useful to provide satisfactory denture experience compared to conventional denture. The attachment for implant overdenture can be classified into bar attachment and solitary attachment. When the positions of the implants are in the mandibular anterior region, bar attachment may be favorable to obtain a rigid support of the entire denture. When implants are distributed both on anterior and posterior region, a solitary attachment could be considered for ease of removal and maintenance. This report presents implant overdenture cases with the patients that had unilateral mandibular alveolar bone atrophy conditions. Different abutments were chosen based on the individual patient's mandibular alveolar bone condition and the treatments were successful in terms of patient satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Keloids are benign fibro-proliferative lesion, related to excessive inflammatory reactions in certain anatomical areas, including the auricles. Their specific etiology remains unclear; nonetheless they exhibit tumor-like characteristics of significant recurrence and cause emotional distress, even with various treatment strategies. We applied intermittent magnetic pressure therapy on ear keloids in combination with surgical excision, and present its effectiveness herein.METHODS: Ear keloid patients were treated with surgical excision followed by magnetic pressure therapy. The keloid tissues underwent excision and keloid marginal flaps were utilized for wound closure. Intermittent magnetic pressure therapy was applied 2 weeks after the surgical procedure. The pressure therapy consisted of a 3-hour application and 2-hour resting protocol (9 hr/day), and lasted for 6 months. The results were analyzed 6 months after the therapeutic procedures, using the scar assessment scale.RESULTS: Twenty-two ear keloids from 20 patients were finally reviewed. Among the keloids that completed the therapeutic course, 20 ear keloids out of 22 in total (90.9%) were successfully eradicated. Two patients (2 keloids) exhibited slight under-correction. Postoperative complications such as wound dehiscence or surgical site infection were not noted. The scar assessment scale demonstrated a significant improvement in each index. The intermittent pressure therapy led to patient compliance, and avoided pressure-related pain and discomfort.CONCLUSION: Excision followed by intermittent pressure application using a magnet successfully reduced the burden of fibro-proliferative keloids, and had good patient compliance. The role of intermittent pressure application and resting should be studied with regard to keloid tissue remodeling.
